What is Search Engine Optimization?
Simply put, SEO or search engine optimization is the strategy and the technique used to increase the number of visitors to a website by aiming for a high-ranking placement in the search engine results page of a search engine. The most common search engines are Google, Yahoo, and Bing.
SEO is also defined as the process of getting “free”, “organic” or “natural” search results on search engines for specific search queries or keywords.
Almost everyone has actively searched for a product or service on Google. Most of us have used Google to do active research at one point in our lives.
Those words you put into the search box are called queries or keywords.
Keywords are important because they show us the exact intent of what our users are actively searching for on Google.
If you are a website owner or a business owner, you want the keywords on your page to be relevant to what people are actively searching for, so that you have a better chance of your website been seen among the search results.
Search Engine Results Page
A search engine results page (SERP) is the page displayed by a web search engine in response to a query by a searcher.
When you put in a query or keyword into the search box of a search engine, for instance, Google, the search engine returns with a list of results on a page. That page is called the search engine results page (SERP).
The Search Engine Results Page is made up of four (4) parts:
- The Search Box
- Search Refinements
- Organic Results and
- Paid Results
The Search Box
The Search box is usually placed in the front and center of the page, giving users the ability to conduct more searches.
The left-hand side of each Search Engine Results page brings out more advanced segmentation of the search results you are viewing.
You can sort by media type (images, video), country, website, date, and other refinements.
Located below the search box are the natural search results, also known as the organic search results. These results are shown as a result of a search engine optimization campaign done by a website. They are ranked on the basis of Google, Yahoo or Bing’s algorithm.
These are at the right-hand side of the organic results, and sometimes above the organic results. These paid results are also known as PPC (Pay per click) ads.
Like we already stated, the three major search engines are Google, Yahoo, and Bing. By viewing the search engine results page of these search engines you should be able to identify each of these sections of the page.
The goal of every business or website owner wanting to run an SEO campaign is to appear on the first page of the organic results of a search engine results page.
75% of searchers do not go past the first page and 90% of these searchers do not even go past the first 5 searches.
